The Delineation Of Antarctica

The huge land mass at the bottom of the world is little known and some, including an American explorers has focused some attention upon this isolated place. Antarctica sports the world’s largest ice mass.It nearly covers the five million square miles of the continent. There are scientists who have calculated that this ice sheet is 2,000 feet in thickness, but others feel number to be insufficient. All of the continent is covered by the ice sheet, with the exception of the tallest mountain summits and certain coastal deposits of volcanic rock.

Just like a glacier, the ice passes in valleys between the high mountains as it heads to the sea. The South Pole is located on the huge central plateau. It juts above the ocean from eight to ten thousand feet. Contact this website if you require information on travel to antarctica.

Antarctica has been divided into four sections which have been named for areas to the north. You would know them as the African,, Pacific and American quadrants. No one has explored the coastlines of the Pacific and African quadrants. Just a small section of the American quadrant’s coast has been explored, but the quadrant is very well known. It includes the Ross Sea area.

Queen Mary Land and the Ross Sea border the quadrant on the East and West sides, respectively. It houses South Victoria Land, Oates Land, King George V Land, Adelle Land and Wilkes Land.Giant mountain peaks jut through the Ross Barrier, a slab of shelf ice measuring over 160,000 square miles.

This is where the explorer set up his base camp.He was near a naturally formed harbor called the Bay of Whales. Ross Island is perched at the westernmost point of the barrier, and features a pair of volcanoes, Mount Erebus and Mount Terror. Spanning over Ross Sea to King Edward VII land, the barrier is over 400 miles in length. The width measured from the sea to the mountains skirting the polar route is 400 miles. The barrier is a great example of shelf ice, which can only be seen in Antarctica. Covering an underwater portion of the Ross Sea section, the barrier is a creation of glacier arms which over the years rolled down from the high mountains. The backcountry continues to disgorge ice to the Ross Sea via various glacier channels which run from five to fifteen miles across and up to one hundred miles in length. Scientists argue about whether the barrier floats or rests on the sea floor.

The Pacific quadrant is bounded on the west by the Ross Sea and there are rock outcroppings in King Edward VII Land. This sector was penetrated by the explorer during his first long flight from the Bay of Whales and it is here that he observed the Scott Nunataks and the Alexandra Mountains. During his flights, he also found fourteen new mountain peaks, a new island and saw vast, unexplored lands. Finally, geographers may be able to create a complete map of the Pacific quadrant’s coastline with the data he collected.

A number of different explorers have been interested in new sectors which include Graham Land, Charcot Land, and Coats Land, all lying in the American Quadrant near the Weddell Sea area. Graham Land was investigated further by another individual who learned that it was in fact a separate island, not a portion of the continent. Of major geographical concern is that the continent itself could very well be divided. The Ross Sea in the quadrant is opposite the Weddell Sea in the American quadrant.

Scientific research and field study are two of the disciplines which are available on an unlimited basis in Antarctica. The geographer searches for specific information which will provide both a complete and accurate map of the coastal region and an overall geographical depiction of the mountain ranges and the polar plateau.

Geologists also look to understand the structure of the land beneath the ice, as well as examine the evidence that has been gleaned from the glaciers as they study how the glaciers affect the land.
